One of my many memories of Superdawg was back in 1975. My son was 10 years old and had a half day of school. I had been really sick with an inner ear infection and was not able to make him any lunch. I asked him if he would like to go to Superdawg on his bike and bring back some lunch for both of us since I could not go out. He did. On his way back, somehow the food he was carrying in the bag soaked through and the bag broke. Needless to say, this little guy tried to salvage whatever he could, but what a mess. He went back to Superdawg and explained what had happened and was given another package with another order which was packed more securely. He was not charged for this. He learned a valuable lesson from this. When he came home and recanted the story over our SUPERDAWG lunch, he said that he thought that the people at SUPERDAWG were really nice - he said that he was expecting the worst and was really surprised that he was treated so nicely being a kid. Beside the above story, I can't tell you how much we enjoy a SUPERDAWG. My son Jeff (now 38 years old) & I (not mentioning my age) need to have a 'fix' every so often. We are never disappointed. And just like my son mentioned, the people at SUPERDAWG are really nice. He has since moved to Georgia and we are trying to get some SUPERDAWGS shipped there because he has told me that SUPERDAWG is the only thing he really misses from home (not mom's cooking!!!) Just wanted to share this special story and memory with you.
Superdawg is dear to my heart for many reasons. Superdawg represents for me all that is "pure," in my life. What I mean is that I have irreplaceable memories with my family from as early back as I can remember where we spent time together going to Superdawg, eating a Superdawg, or joking about getting a Superdawg at 11:30 at night, on a weekend or a weekday. Superdawg is a gathering place, a place where families can go and "be" together. The good times and the bad... Superdawg is a part of Chicago, a party of our family that will never be forgotten. I plan on keeping the family tradition going with my children. Our son already says, "Doggie, dogggie..." Never change, Superrdawg, you are one of a kind.
I grew up with Superdawg back in the late 50's and 60's, and could never get enough of their mouth watering flavor. My wife and I now live in California (she's a native Californian). I took her back to Chicago a few years ago and introduced her to Superdawg. She has "raved over it" ever since. We plan on going back to "Chi town" this Christmas, and Superdawg will see as much business from me as I can muster. It never ceases to amaze me how such a wonderful food creation has withstood the test of time and still has that memorable taste it had almost 50 years ago. What a tribute to the "best hot dog" (ahem - excuse me - Superdawg) in the world.
I was raised on Superdawgs. Literally. I was born in May 1948, the same month and year Superdawg was born. As soon as I could eat solid food, my mom and dad would take me there with them, remove the bun and cut up my Superdawg in little pieces so I could eat it. I have so many memories I couldn't list them all. Once in the mid-1950's, my family went down to Soldier Field for the 4th of July celebration. My dad left the top down on our '53 Ford convertible in the parking lot and there was a torrential downpour. By the time we got back to the car, water streamed out when we opened the doors. What to do? We went directly to Superdawg and that made it all better! Sometime in the late 1950's, Superdawg burned down. It seemed as if it would never re-open. This was the end of the world as I knew it. In 1960 we spent some time in South America and I vividly remember waking from a dream there, that Superdawg had been re-built and I was eating one. I was sure Superdawg would be back by the time we returned to Chicago at the end of that summer, but no! It seemed to take forever, but eventually a new Superdawg emerged from the ashes. How long was it? Like three years? It was back in time for my high school years. Forget Nick's and all those other places - Superdawg was the place to go. I have always lived in this area, and still enjoy a Superdawg at least once or twice a month. And maybe a tamale (bunch). In my whole life I have only once ordered anything except a Superdawg and a tamale (tried the fried shrimp back in 1965 or so). A couple years ago, after many hundreds of visits, for the first time in my life I rolled down my window and lost the tray! Today's power windows- they keep going down after you let up on the switch! Spoiled a perfect record. And embarrassed my son who was with me. I used to laugh when I saw others do the same thing. At least the speakers are now attached to the poles so you can't drive off with them still hanging on your window. Seems to me I saw that happen once. Now my three teenage kids crave Superdawgs the same way I always have. And they know the ground rules. Never add ketchup. And always order the right way: A Superdawg with everything - including! The tradition continues. Don't ever change! And don't EVER close. A lot of people know you are an essential part of life, so much more than just an eatery.
My name is Mike and I currently live in the Northwest suburbs with my wife and 3 children. In the early 70's, when I was a teenager living on the northwest side of Chicago, I worked at the Walgreen's drug store that used to be right across the street from Superdawg (adjacent to the Lilac Farm). During my summer lunch breaks, almost every day I would pick up a Superburger w/fries and a shake and bring it back to the small break room at Walgreen's. Invariably, the pharmacist on duty would be taking his lunch break at the same time. I would usually offer Jack some fries and he would always respond "Well...I'll just have one" and proceed to take about half the order! I can't blame Jack, because you've gotta admit, Superdawg has (among other tasty delights), the absolute best french fries anywhere in the world. Of course, whenever we're in the area (or sometimes even if we're not), we always make a point to stop at Superdawg. Our whole family enjoys Superdawg, and my teenage son will often drive the 20 miles or so to Milwaukee and Devon with his girlfriend when he's in the mood for a delicious meal. I'm getting a craving right now as I write this. See ya' soon!
We visited your location on Devon and Milwaukee Ave yesterday (5/30/05). Joined with me were my husband and two boys. This was a special visit for me since I had not been here in over 15 years!!!! My father passed away Memorial Day weekend in '93. I have fond memories of him taking me to the cubs games, chicago museums and the scenic routes of Sheridan Road. We always stopped on the way home in Arl Hts to Superdawg for a special meal to take home. When he had passed away, and I moved further north near Wisconsin, I didn't visit. Boy, I made a mistake! THere has been NO other location who serves up Dogs and Burgers like you do!!!! Yesterday it was my father's 12 year anniversary since his death and I along with my family went to go visit him and then take the scenic route on Sheridan to visit his parents in Calvary Cemetary in Evanston. On the way back up we decided to go and visit a fond memory of mine to Superdawg so my husband and my two boys could experience the Superdawg taste!!! As soon as I took a bite out of my hotdog, those memories came back!! Nothing has changed!!! That is a good thing!! It's perfect!!! I had a chocolate malt and boy was it good!! Just like how it was back then!!! I want to thank You for the fun and bringing me back to my childhood!!! Not many places stay the same or end up closing but I hope the next time I am out that way, it will still be there!!!! If it weren't for your pure beef heart, your success wouldn't have brought you where you are today!! My boys loved their hot dogs too and we plan on making frequent stops now!!! They are only 6 and 4 years of age but I am sure they will grow up with Superdawg!!!
My mouth is watering as I write this, remembering when back in the early fifty's my boyfriend and I would get in his customized red ford convertible and head for "Superdawg"..My favorite was the cheeseburger with that delicious bright green relish..The fries would stick to the cheese so it was a double treat..I live in Florida now but my fondest memory of Chicago is and will always be "Superdawg". .See you the next time I visit..Can't wait!!!!
WELL LET ME TELL YOU FIRST THAT YOU HAVE CREATED THE BEST DAWG I HAVE EVER TASTED. I GREW UP EATING AND THINKING THE DODGER DOGS WERE THE BEST, BOY WAS THAT WRONG. I'M FROM CALIFORNIA AND HAD GONE TO CHICAGO TO MEET MY FUTURE FATHER AND MOTHER-IN-LAW, WHEN WE GOT TO MIDWAY I WAS STARVING. WALKING BY THE THE SUPERDAWG STAND IT WASN'T SOUNDING SO GOOD, SEEING AS HOW THERE WASN'T A BALL GAME GOING ON. WELL THAT DAY IS AN ONGOING HISTORY FOR ME AND MY FUTURE WIFE. SHE THINKS IT'S FUNNY AND WEIRD THAT I HAVE BEEN SO INTO FINDING OUT WHAT YOU GUYS WERE ABOUT. LET ME TELL YOU, SHE IS AMAZED BY THE STORIES ADDRESSED TO YOU FROM YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS. I WILL BE BACK TO VISIT AND LET ME TELL YOU, YOU'RE NUMBER ONE ON MY LIST. YOUR CUSTOMER FOR LIFE, JOHN L.
My 16 month old son had his first SUPERDAWG. However he was not alone, his great-grandma/pa, and grandma, and myself all had one too. We packed the car up in St. Cloud, Minnesota at 10 am on Thursday and by 6 pm (8 hour trip) we arrived at Superdawg for our dinner. 15 Minutes later we arrived at the great-grandparents house and sat right down for a nice Superdawg dinner. Only after the last fry was eaten did we go and unpack the car. It was a trip that introduced Superdawg to my son, but also to my wife who now also craves the poppy-seed bun treat. The 8 hour trip could not have been topped with anything else. The directions from St. Cloud MN ends at Milwaukee & Devon, and the directions to the grandparents house begins at Superdawg.
I have long since moved away from my home town of Edgebrook (Chicago) IL. and my favorite restaurant, "Superdawg". Every chance I get, going home means first stopping to have two Superdawgs, then on to see my family. I'm from a four generation Superdawg family, and proud of it. My grandmother, grandfather, and mother, were one of your first customers. Then they took me, my older brother, and younger sister. My mother would tell me stories about her Friday night dates with my dad going to the drive-in, and stopping for a whooper burger. I have told my kids stories about my friends, and I, walking through Bunker Hill Woods to go swimming at Whealan Pool, and stopping for lunch at Superdawg. I've taken my husband, and our four kids, to what I call, "The Superdawg Experience." It's not a hot dog, it's not a wiener, it's the ultimate experience. With ketchup, mustard, your neon green relish, green tomato's, and pickles too, yum. There's nothing on this Earth that tastes better then a Superdawg. I look forward to the day when I can take my grandchildren for their first Superdawg. "Thank You" for all the happy memories, and for a place I call home.
December 1980, the first year of our marriage, my husband and I traveled from California to the Chicago area for his family reunion. (he grew up in Park Ridge) It was then I ate my first Superdawg. He was so insistent that we go there even though the weather was awful (snow storm in December, go figure) all for a hot dog?! Was I enlightened. It was absolutely the best dawg I ever had!! When I was pregnant with our first son two years later, I craved them so much my in-laws sent a care package to me with two superdawgs packed in dry ice. Although it wasn't as good as right outta the kitchen it was still delightful. We now go back every time we are there and take our now adult sons there too. Don't ever change! Even the day-glo green relish! With all the changes for bigger, better, and improved, we still need the traditional and old fashioned for great memories to take us back to a more simple time. If and when we have grandchildren, you can bet on it that they will have a Superdawg too. Thanks again, Cyndi
I am a HUGE Superdawg fan. When I was a young boy, I remember my parents taking me to Superdawg once in a while to have the famous Superdawg. To this day I always get a Superdawg with everything and a large coke. I have ordered that for the past 10 years.(I am 19 years old now.) When I was about 8 years old, my parents decided to move to Bartlett which is 45 minutes away from Superdawg. I missed it so much that when I bought my first car a few years back, The first place I went to was Superdawg. I have been going to this great place ever since I was a little boy. I have showed all of my buddies this place and they love it. As a matter of fact, I am there just about every other week with a friend of mine who enjoys the food as much as I do! I don't care that it is 45 minutes away...I love it. It is cool to see all the news clippings in the "sit down" area. I have been to many hotdog joints and Superdawg is by far the best. You have a customer for life Maurie and Flaurie. Thank you.
MY SISTER JUST MOVED TO CHICAGO A MONTH AGO. OUR FAMILY DECIDED TO SPEND THIS THANKSGIVING IN CHICAGO. IT WAS A LAST MINUTE DECISION. WE ARE FROM SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. LATE FRIDAY NIGHT WE WERE HUNGRY & HAD NOT HAD DINNER, AS WE WERE DRIVING BACK TO OUR HOTEL I NOTICED THE 2 HOT DAWGS ON THE ROOF OF THE BUILDING. I TOLD MY HUSBAND TO STOP SO WE COULD TRY THE HOT DOGS. I WAS NOT COVINCED I WAS GONNA GET ANYTHING SPECIAL. I TOLD MY HUSBAND THAT I HAD SEEN THIS PLACE ON T.V. ONE DAY, I SAID WE NEEDED TO TRY IT TO SEE JUST HOW GOOD THEY SAY THEIR HOT DOGS REALLY ARE, I FIGURED WE'RE IN CHICAGO SO WHY NOT. I'M NOT REALLY A FAN A HOT DOGS AT ALL & I DON'T LIKE THE TASTE OF PEPPERS EITHER. TEXAS IS ALL ABOUT THE KETCHUP, MUSTARD, & RELISH ON OUR HOT DOGS. WELL, I DIDN'T REALIZE I HAD NO CLUE WHAT A REAL GOOD HOT DOG IS SUPPOSED TO TASTE LIKE UNTIL I HAD THE SUPERDAWG. TALK ABOUT GOOD. I DID HAVE TO ASK WHAT THE GREEN STUFF ON MY HOT DOG WAS, I HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING SO GREEN IN COLOR BUT WHO CARES CAUSE NOW I LOVE YOUR HOT DAWGS & PEPPERS TOO. MY HUSBAND & I LOVED THEM. THE ONLY REGRET WE HAD WAS NOT GOING BACK AGAIN RIGHT BEFORE WE LEFT FOR HOME. WE'LL BE CUSTOMERS FROM NOW ON. YOUR PLACE IS GOING TO BE THE FIRST PLACE WE ARE GOING TO GO THE NEXT TIME WE ARE IN TOWN & PLANS HAVE ALREADY BEEN MADE, IT'S JUST TOO BAD THERE'S NOTHING EVEN CLOSE TO TASTING AS GOOD AS YOUR FOOD HERE. SEE YOU SOON. RICK & MARY
My name is Nancy. I am a lifelong resident of a northwest suburb of Chicago but my grandma and grandpa lived off Nagle and Rosedale for over twenty years. In the sixties and seventies, we would come in from the suburbs to visit my grandparents every Sunday without fail. My grandma would often take us to Lilac Farm and a few other stores and we would ask her to stop at Superdawg. My brother and I were always so facinated by the giant tarzan and jane dressed icons. When you live somewhere all your life or for a very long time, you take it for granted and always say you're going to get there again someday. Things change, we get older and we often all move away. My grandpa passed so my grandma moved to the Schaumburg area and never came back to the city for thirty years. My family and I moved on to North Carolina for 8 long years. During this time away from Chicago, I became reinspired by all things that make our city and state so great. This last winter, my husband had a job opportunity that brought us back to great state of Illinois, western suburbs in particular. Well guess what? Yesterday, I came and kidnapped my grandma (with her consent of course) and took her and my kids into the old neighborhood and to Superdawg!!!! I called my mom who is still back in North Carolina to brag about our trip. She was not pleased at all. She's the biggest hot dog freak I know! And guess where we'll be coming back when she moves back here next year??? Anyway, we walked in the restaurant and saw Maurie. He and my grandma exchanged pleasantries and we ordered and ate the best Chicago hot dog known to man. Please do not ever sell out or close up. You are a true American success story. We're all so proud of you and wish you so many more years of great business.
